Queen, Advocate & Humanitarian, Azia Hernandez

Azia Hernandez is a Mexican-American who has been crowned your most recent Miss Massachusetts United States. In a heart-breaking YouTube video Azia shared the story of her unexpected double mastectomy. This near-death experience started a journey of self-love and inspired a movement. Azia has since written a children’s book titled "Love Yourselves." This book has a positive message of embracing your differences and loving who you are. Azia set off to the Dominican Republic in the beginning of 2022 to help build an orphanage and spread her message to the local children. Azia organized outings where she met with children of the D.R. to dance, make balloon animals, and share her message of self-love.

Why do you do what you do?

I had my breasts removed for medical reasons in a lifesaving surgery. Since then, I have had reconstructive surgery. In my process of healing, I started to design my own creations while also learning to love myself.

What are some projects you are currently working on?

I have been working on a lingerie line. The official release will be this summer but there has been so much work that has been going on behind the scenes that I am happy to be sharing with you. There are hundreds of pieces that were originally designed and taken into consideration to be a part of the official line. There has been color swatches, fabric testing, and even a focus group. This week we are doing our first photo shoot with some beautiful models and soon we will release the line for all of you to enjoy.

What are your goals for the short-term and long-term ?

Short-term is that I want for every time a girl puts on a piece from my lingerie line she feels special, confident and sexy!

Long-term I would like my name and lingerie line to be associated with being hot and humble.

Who or what inspires you?

When I design, I look at every piece and think to myself “is this piece like a flower?” Does it spark joy despite its unique shape or color. Flowers are my favorite thing and one of my big inspirations. I believe they are sent from heaven and love how they fill you with love.

If you could change anything about your industry, what would it be?

I would like to change the lack of purpose the fashion industry has. Fast fashion has taken the world by storm. Clothes are designed in mass volume to wear once in a photo and thrown in a land fill because shortly after it was purchased it is no longer relevant. But if something is made with real love, thought, and purpose it will make those wearing it feel cherished and that item will stand the test of time and become a staple.

What do you plan to do once you cross the millionaire mark?

I would order a massive cake to celebrate the milestone with my team!
