A Legacy of Light: Empowering Women and Community with Charlena Griggs-Alston

A life dedicated to service is a life that continuously creates ripples of change. For Chicago native Charlena Griggs-Alston, this philosophy is not just an ideal—it is a daily practice. Raised as one of ten children by parents Aleis and Eddie Griggs, Charlena was instilled with the profound values of compassion, giving back, and supporting the community. Today, she channels these foundational values into her work as a dedicated wife, mother, educator, and the visionary founder of the nonprofit organization Sparkle & Shine.

With a deep commitment to lifelong learning, Charlena holds a Bachelor of Business degree from Colorado Technical University and a Master’s degree in Business Administration with a specialization in Nonprofit Management from the University of Phoenix. Across a career in education spanning over three decades, she has used knowledge, mentorship, and engagement to empower others. However, her most profound impact arguably stems from her 17-year journey at the helm of Sparkle & Shine.

Guided by her Christian faith and inspired by her favorite scripture, Psalm 121:1-2, Charlena built Sparkle & Shine to be a beacon of hope for women experiencing homelessness. The organization focuses on holistic, lasting transformation rather than just temporary relief. By offering educational workshops, employment readiness programs, and personal development opportunities, Sparkle & Shine inspires its participants to rebuild their confidence and step back into society as productive, empowered individuals. Charlena, a former Ms. Mahogany beauty pageant titleholder and the recipient of numerous Community Service Awards, intimately understands the importance of building self-esteem and setting bold visions for the future.

Celebrate 17 Years of Impact at the Legacy of Light Awards

This year, Sparkle & Shine is celebrating its 17th anniversary, and Charlena is inviting the community to be a part of the milestone. On Saturday, December 19, 2026, the organization will host The Legacy of Light Awards Christmas Ball & Champagne Brunch.

Set in the stunning, award-winning Bolingbrook Golf Club (2001 Rodeo Drive, Bolingbrook, IL), this elegant daytime gala will run from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Hosted by Charlena herself, the event promises a joyful Christmas Ball atmosphere featuring live music, a DJ, exciting raffles, gifts, and a special "Best Dressed" award. Guests are encouraged to step out in their finest formal holiday attire, embracing the event's dress code: "Tis the Season to Shine".

Beyond the celebration, this event is a crucial fundraiser for a 501(c)(3) organization actively changing lives. Purchasing a ticket is a direct investment in the continued success of Sparkle & Shine's educational and transitional programs.
